The EMBO Journal is dedicated to the publication of manuscripts from the field of molecular biology in its broadest sense. To be acceptable manuscripts should contain novel results of significant general interest that provide new functional insight into molecular or cellular processes. It is the policy of the EMBO Council to restrict the number of pages published each year to no more than 6500. Therefore not all papers that receive a balance of favourable reviews can be accepted. The following categories of manuscript fall outside the scope of The EMBO Journal . Those that are largely or entirely confirmatory in nature or that provide only a minor extension to existing published information. Those that describe novel methodology without providing significant novel data of general significance. Those describing gene knock-outs that do not provide significant novel insight into gene function. Those describing the cloning and sequencing of genes or cDNAs without providing additional functional information on the gene product. Data on the expression pattern of the gene product or confirmation that the recombinant product has the activity previously ascribed to the gene product are not considered to be sufficiently novel functional information to justify consideration.
